WEIGH IN: I gained 3 LBS

WIth all my big words of being a health watcher, not a weight watcher, I know now I am liar. The weight gain hit hard, very hard. I am disillusioned, sad, angry, disgusted with myself, and so close to giving up. It all makes no difference. in the last 2 weeks, which have been 2 weeks of healthy eating, geared towards losing weight, but also 2 weeks of fitness, geared to losing weight I have actually managed to GAIN 4 lbs.

Chances are you will see me drop off for a while while I battle my biggest enemy, ME, and try to call upon my biggest hero, ME again. My way of dealing with ME is to close off, to close to door behind me and search my soul, fight my battles, lick my wounds and return as if nothing went on behind closed doors.

I'll be back!

Gah! I KNOW how frustrating that is!!!! It happens to me on a fairly regular basis. However, you KNOW that you are doing all the right stuff. Drink that water, move that body, eat moderately - you will be a fat-burning machine. Unfortunately, some of that time you are a muscle-building machine. Not that that's a bad thing, but muscle is a heck of a lot denser than fat - and weighs more for the same space (yes, I know - a pound is a pound and muscle takes up less space than fat - which is why I said "same space"). Perhaps you should make friends with your tape measure and give the scale a rest for a little bit. Just keep doing what you know is right and I bet you'll be shocked when you get back on your scale in, say, a month?

That happens Willow. Honest.
You said it yourself - you lost x number of pounds of fat, and x + 2 lbs of muscle.
Whatever cardio you do that is weight-bearing, like walking, will build muscle. Even if you keep your HR low.

You've changed your body mass for the better, even though the scale shows a slight, and TEMPORARY up-tick.
That is not a reason to get angry with yourself or give up. That's reason for celebration!

It's not. 3 lbs gain (mostly lean, sexy muscle!) compared to the MANY pounds of fat you have lost, is NOTHING.

Get your emotions in check. Take a bit of a break from the scale. Get out your tape measurer, like Sayre suggested, and find a bit of perspective.

You're doing beautifully. Yes, even with the gain.

I know how hard it is to see the numbers go up. But know this...you were eating healthy. You were exercising. Eating healthy and exercising are so good for you, it's incredible how much they help your overall health and reduce your chances of getting any chronic diseases.

As for the gain itself, who knows? Water retention, that time of the month, and a whole host of other reasons could be behind that. If you don't keep a journal of food and exercise, you may find that helpful.

Living healthy is easy when the numbers go the way we want them to. The true test is when they don't. You can pass this test. Don't let this disappointment be an excuse to sabotage all the good you have doing. Keep it up. I know you can.

Come on Willow, hang in there and get yourself in CHECK. I know the feeling of shutting down and it does nothing but make your task at hand harder. You can do it, I know I am ready to do it again and wish I hadn't basically shut down for the last SEVERAL weeks.

The weight WILL come off. Your two weeks of self discipline WILL show its effects in lbs. that WILL drop off in the future.

On the other hand, if you start back with unhealthful eating and physical inactivity, you WILL gain weight for real. Your past good efforts will be sabotaged. You'll have to either live with the weight gained and add to it, or work hard to get rid of it once again.

I don't believe that exercising hard causes one to lose less quickly than light or moderate exercise. I know that this is the current wisdom. One gets rid of the lbs. by eating less calories (energy) the one uses through routine activity and intentionally pursued exercise. Eventually the deficit shows up in the form of weight loss.

Possibly you are retaining water and that is why the scale is showing a weight gain. Maybe it would help if you weighed daily and at different times of the day so that you could track the course of your weight better. Maybe a consultation with a doctor is called for. During a period of time, extending three or four weeks, I lost only fractions of pounds despite much effort and self discipline. This turned out to be a side effect of some meds I was taking.

You have already gotten rid of a tremendous amount of weight. Be proud of yourself and please DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!!!!

Sorry about the gain, I totally understand how your feeling, but Half Man is right, you were doing the right thing, and even though you had a gain your actions were still benefiting you. Chin up and keep going.
